I haven't seen this aspect of the dissemination of the Paterson/Simic
anthology documented. Let me add that the same program was repeated the
following evening perhaps a mile away within the context of an
international poetry festival organized by Chapters Literary Bookstore. On
that occasion Michael Dirda of the Washington Post introduced. Dana Gioia
has influenced Chapters for years, & Graywolf publishes him. While my
interest in the sociology of taste could have led me to witness this event,
I didn't want to dampen the resonance I was still feeling from the
brilliant lectures & performances of Jaap Blonk and Charles Amirkhanian
earlier that same week at Georgetown University, curated by Ward Tietz.
Thursday, Nov. 11, 8 p.m. - Don Paterson, Fred D'Aguiar, Glyn Maxwell, Ruth
Padel and Jo Shapcott (Jenny McKean Moore Reading Series)
Marvin Center Amphitheatre, Third Floor, 800 21st Street, NW. G.W.U.
Five British poets from the new anthology, New British Poetry, edited by
Charles Simic and Don Paterson (Graywolf Press, 2004), will showcase their
work. Graywolf Press and the British Council have helped to make this
reading possible.
