I think that was a later version. The earliest seems to be in a letter to
Olson in 1950: 'I wd imply a little of Stevens' use (the things created in a
poem and existing there...) & too, go over the possible casts or methods for
a way into a 'subject': to make it clear that form is never more than an
extension of content. An enacted or possible 'stasis' for thought.' [O/RC 1:
78-79]
Earlier he makes a comment which bears on what I meant by making experience
'a matter of reference': 'An attitude that puts weight first on form [ ...]
will never get to content.'
