Work, Stress and Health
The Whitehall II Study has been following up a cohort of 10,308
London-based civil servants since 1985, looking at the relationship
between working conditions and health, particularly focussing on
coronary heart disease. The study has shown clear links, with those
in higher grades consistently enjoying better health and improved
life expectancy. The Health and Safety Executive has based its draft
Management Standards on the findings.
This seminar will summarise the findings of the Whitehall II study,
give an insight into what it is like to be a participant in a long-
term large scale survey of changing health and review the impact and
relevance of the study to today's Civil Service and its employees.
The seminar will also launch a new free publication, "Work Stress &
Health: the Whitehall II study".
This publication was commissioned by the Council of Civil Service
Unions (CCSU) in collaboration with the Cabinet Office to make the
findings accessible to a wider audience, including the participants,
and to help inform policy and practice on working conditions within
the Civil Service and beyond.
Copies will be available at the seminar. It will be sent to all
those involved in the study, and will be available on the internet.
