Hi André
It may seem logical and has huge implications in the way teachers in FE
work.
Part of the remit of the WCC is to collaborate and share content amongst our
consortium members.
As part of this we are running a series of curriculum collaboration events
(which are open to the whole FE (and HE) sector). These events allow
practitioners to come together, produce content which is then shared amongst
attendees. www.westerncc.ac.uk/events.html has lists of these events and
more details.
It would also not be fair not to mention the FERL website,
http://ferl.becta.org.uk which also has a repository of materials which the
sector can use.
You may also want to look at Jorum http://www.jorum.ac.uk/ , Jorum, the
learning materials repository service, would encourage and facilitate the
deposit, re-use and sharing of learning materials in UK tertiary education.
There are lots of implications when sharing content, IPR being a major
challenge as well as cultural and educationally. The WCC is currently
undertaking research on this as part of the FAIR Enough project,
www.fairenough.ac.uk which is part of the JISC FAIR programme.
The IPR issue needs to be taken seriously especially if people are going to
re-use or re-purpose learning objects. A simple example, I create a resource
which contains a picture from an image collection I am licenced to use. I
can freely share that learning object with anyone (according to the image
licence) however whoever uses that object can not reuse that image in
another learning object unless they also have a licence to use that image.
Another aspect to consider is the cultural implications of sharing, though
in reality this in some smnall ways is already happening, teaching staff
already use shared resources eg books and journals, therefore shared
electronic learning objects are only an additional resource to aid the
teacher in facilitating the learning process.
Other implications and things to consider, effective metadata to allow
effective searching, repository tools to allow cross institutional
searching, etc etc etc
