Frank:
After data estimation for the ANOVA, click on the Results button to access the contrast manager,
then simply enter '1' (no quotes) as the contrast. A SPM map will be created showing the voxels
that met the criteria defined by the ANOVA. The absence of gray & white in the contrast manager
during the random effects analysis is normal.

Dear SPMers,
I have what I hope is a very basic question in regards to conducting
random effects analyses.
We designed an event related design for 11 subjects and statistical maps
represent only those TRs of interest for one condition, with no contrasts.
We have created 11 contrast images, (one per subject) and entered them
into the "Basic Models" for a one-way ANOVA. After the prompts for
several steps (e.g., grand mean scaling, etc), the stats design comes up
and the window is blank- as though it doesn't recognize the design?
So, when checking the Results of the newly created SPM.mat file it asks if
the data should be estimated. Following data estimation, a contrast
manager pops up requesting contrast information.
Two questions:
What is entered for the contrast manager after data estimation- (1) x11?
Why is the Basic Model not recognizing the design?
Best,
Frank Hillary
