After five and a half years of co-ordinating this discussion group I think
it's time to hand it on to somebody else.
It isn't much of a burden. The list is not moderated. Most of the
functions are automatic, managed by the jiscmail service. From time to
time I have tried to recruit new members and stimulate debate, but this is
probably no longer necessary these days as the list is lively and
continues to grow.
Because this and all the lists supported by jiscmail are primarily for the
UK academic community, at least one of the list co-ordinators ('owners')
must be based at a UK higher education institution. I say 'at least one'
because it is possible to have more than one list owner.
If anyone is interested, please get in touch with me ([log in to unmask])
and I'll tell you a bit more about list management. I will wait until the
END OF SEPTEMBER before contacting jiscmail - but note that they will
CLOSE THE LIST DOWN if it does not have an owner.
I'm really pleased to see how much the list's membership has grown during
this period, and how active it has been in airing views and bringing
researchers and practitioners together from all over the world. All the
indications are that it's highly valued as a means of communication.
I plan to continue co-ordinating the environment-disasters list on
jiscmail with Charles Kelly.
Best wishes, and thanks for all your inputs during the past five and a
half years.
John
