Dear Stefanie,
Thank you very much for your invitation to this very interesting event. I would certainly like to participate, but at present would be unable to get to Switzerland from Australia. So I have to decline your invitation. Please keep me on your mailing list as this situation may change.
Very best wishes,
John Handmer

The Swiss Natural Hazards Competence Centre (<http://www.cenat.ch/>CENAT) is organizing an international workshop
on how to cope with risks due to natural hazards in the future. The workshop will take place at the
Centro Stefano Franscini in Monte Veritą near Ascona/Switzerland.
Title
Coping with Risks Due to Natural Hazards in the 21st Century: "RISK 21"
Date
28.November - 3.December 2004
Theme
Risks due to natural hazards are continuously increasing during the last decades. To cope
with this situation there is a need for integrated risk management strategies including prevention,
intervention, recovery and insurance measures, which have to be prioritized, e.g. based on
cost-efficiency considerations. Risks have to be reduced on levels, which are accepted by the
society. Many open questions arise to reach this consensus. The workshop will focus on those
aspects in risk management related to understanding risk perception, risk aversion, acceptable
levels of risk and risk dialogue.
Suggested Topics
· Overall strategies in risk management
· Ethic aspects of risk culture
· Risk culture in different religions
· Risk aversion
· Risk dialogue
· Definition of risk levels (acceptable loss of life, damages to buildings, environment,
socio-political structures, etc.)
· Sustainability and risk
Sessions
Several keynote lectures will set the stage for selected topics. A limited number of oral
presentations will be given on each topic. There will be ample opportunity for poster
presentations. Two afternoon discussions will focus just on levels of acceptable risks.
Field Trip
A mid-week excursion will include a visit to a hazard managed area nearby Monte Veritą.
