I'm comparatively new to the list and this was the first time I recall
reference to Adrian's online list. With that in mind he did leave himself
open to comments. To be constructive I have offered him a list of those I
know of, predominantly in west Cornwall, but we need some criteria here as
Adrian only lists substantially complete or complete houses. Do we list
every house that was built and note where it no longer exists? Do we list
only those with some remaining features? For example there are four houses
in the St Just area which only survive to plinth level, however this leaves
features which are up to 3m or so in height. On Cape Cornwall there is a
very fine stack (listed Grade II*) although the engine house is long gone.
At Wheal Hearle there is one wall exposed to 1.5m height of a house for a
10-inch whim engine, now part of a Cornish hedge. It's not a stunning
feature but very unusual in Cornwall and potentially unique. I don't want
to get bogged down in what constitutes an engine house but do we want a
consensus before we continue?
