The first printed use of the word was in 1838 in a civil engineering
context. (thanks OED), it was where the inverted arch was formed at the
bottom of a tunnel or brick sewer.

Subject: [MINING-HISTORY] mining terminology
The term "invert" is in regular use regarding drains being the lowest point
of the inside surface of the pipe, channel etc - i.e. where the water etc
flows
The phrase "..take foundations down to invert level of drains ... " is
common on building plans. When carrying out a survey using a level it is
usual to take the details of the cover and invert level of any manholes on
the site
I was not aware that it had mining origins.
