Hello everyone, and greetings from Tasmania
I am looking for information on a couple of mining companies that operated
in the 1850/60s in Chile, South America.
I would like to know whether these companies have any records anywhere that
I could research.
1. The first is the 'English Mining Company'
Philip Barnes, the founder of the Royal Botanic Society was a director of
this company, around the 1850's I think.
2. The second is the South American and Mexican Mining Company
I believe in 1855 there were disagreements at the mine in Herradura, near
Coquimbo, Chile and the management was sacked, and new managers were sent
out from England to take control.
Philip Barnes' son, Philp Edward Barnes, went out to Chile in late 1855 to
manage this company.
A letter written in 1856 by the Chairman, J.D. Powles, gives the address of
the company as 15 Angel Court, Bank, London
Philips brother John Henry Barnes also went out to Chile and was some sort
of mining engineer, but Im not sure which company he was with. He worked
at Cerrillos and Tongoy.
3. The third is the Peruvian Corporation. Im not sure whether this was a
mining company or a railway company. (Sir) Henry Whatley Tyler was a
Chairman of this company.
I would be grateful if anyone can point me to where any archives of these
companies might be, or has any knowledge of these companies.
Many thanks for any help
