Attn: Professor Dr. Harald Witthoft, Siegen, Germany. Dear Professor
Witthoft or other mining-history listers who might be able to help me. I'm
conducting genealogical research. My gggg grandfather Johannes Heupel, owned
several mines (i'm presuming iron; perhaps coal?) with his brothers (names
unknown, which i need help in identifying) in the Siegen region during the
time of Napolean. I have no birthdate or dates of mine ownership for
Johannes Heupel, unfortunately, but the timeframe we're talking about is the
late 1780s and 1790s to the early 1800s. This is based on the birth of one
of his sons, Johannes Engel Heupel (Heibel in America), b. 18 May 1807 in
Siegen. I am looking for any help in identifying his mines during that time,
or even their location on a map, as well as identifying any paperwork or
documents that signify past ownership in an effort to 1) identify Johannes
brothers by name and 2) prove that he did, in fact, own mines during this
time. Further, I would much enjoy reading any historical articles related to
mining in the Siegen region during the time of Napolean. Finally, I realize
this is probably not the typical type of request that you receive about
mining history, but I shall be ever grateful for any insight you can provide
to me. MaryJo Heibel-Regier, Denver, CO- USA
