My earlier posting seems to have inadvertently moved the subject away from
head protection and for this I apologise. The point that I was trying to
make was that the introduction of cap lamps did not do away with hand lamps,
whether flame or battery powered, for a number of reasons.
The acetylene lamps that I mentioned may well have been for wearing on
safety helmets but I always saw them being carried by miners going to and
from their place of work.
Barry's mention of the 1956 regulations probably serves to place a date on
the introduction of the Ringrose automatic gas detector. I am guessing that
there were also detectors from other manufacturers but the Ringrose was the
one that was commonly used in this area.
I remember that the introduction of the Ringrose brought other problems on
account of the space needed for storage, servicing and charging and also in
arrangements for the charging apparatus etc.
