PARIP 2005

International Conference | 29 June - 03 July 2005

***** CALL FOR EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST - DEADLINE 30 JUNE 2004 ******

PARIP ? Practice as Research in Performance ? is a five-year, AHRB-funded
project directed by Professor Baz Kershaw and the Department of Drama:
Theatre, Film, Television at the University of Bristol, UK. PARIP is
collaborating with the School of Performance and Cultural Industries at the
University of Leeds to produce and host the 2005 international conference,
to be held at Bretton Hall Campus, West Yorkshire.

The conference organizers are now inviting expressions of interest from
international and UK researchers / groups working through / with theatre,
television, film or dance practices. Initial expressions of interest should
be no more than 200 words. We welcome proposals from:

1. International practitioner-researchers to organize and run country- or
region-based panel sessions to curate, present and discuss practice as
research in the context of local systems and infrastructures.

2. UK-based practitioner-researchers to offer maximum one-hour-long
performances / screenings for plenary peer review.

3. UK-based practitioner-researchers to offer for peer review/discussion
combinations of a) performances / screenings; b) performances / screenings
with associated documentation, concerning presencing the absent practices
via writing, moving image, bodily knowledges, etc.; and c) expository
writing-based conference papers. Ideally, individual presentations within
these sessions are to be 20, 30 or 40 minutes in duration. These are
three-hour sessions split between grouped presentations and discussion.

4. UK and international practitioner-researchers from across the subject
fields to organize and convene three-hour workshops that provide the
opportunity for researchers to develop and share their practices within
this event context. Two workshop models are envisioned: a) groups of
practitioners may work on a collective theme through different practices
across the course of the event and b) practitioners may convene
single-session workshops to focus on one area of practice.

With the significant lead-in time to the conference researchers are
encouraged to approach appropriate institutions / funding bodies in their
home countries in order to secure adequate financial support to produce
their contributions.

The deadline for these statements of interest is 30 June 2004. The deadline
for substantive proposals is 31 December 2004, format and specific criteria
to be announced nearer the time.

Initial statements should include:

1. Names of those potentially involved
2. Area of practice (to include the range of research practices across
dance, theatre, film, TV)
3. Institutional/company affiliation and address

Please direct any queries and statements to:

BRETTON HALL CAMPUS is well served by air (Leeds-Bradford International),
rail (to Wakefield Westgate), road (approx 2 km from M1) and bus (from
Wakefield).

PARIP investigates creative-academic issues raised by practice as research
(PaR) across the performance media: dance, film, television and theatre.
The project is

1. identifying a range of PaR processes and activities in UK and some
European higher education institutions and producing a database of
materials for use by the constituencies;

2. investigating key questions raised by PaR and developing a diverse range
of case studies to produce knowledges surrounding notions of value;

3. consulting on and realizing a series of creative projects to advance
potential uses of digital technologies for documentation and dissemination.
