>Eh? Why is it wrong for CILIP to do what others do as a matter of course?
>(BTW there is no "Trade Union" for librarians)
It's not wrong, quite the opposite.
I believe that many people joining CILIP either believe CILIP does fulfill
this role or much more likely that they should be.
It's down to assumptions, when you join a professional organisation you
might expect that form of representation. I don't think CILIP should be
shouting from the rooftops that they don't but maybe somewhere along the
line it needs to be pointed out to people. In terms of when you sign up
it's been 10 years since I signed up at university so I don't know what is
said on recruitment drives.
I know theres no trade union for librarians, you tend to sign up for
whichever one is closest to the sector you work in, PCS, Acambis etc.
Any non specific trade union wouldn't know the intracicies of the LIS
world, that is where professional organisations might step in. But we don't
have that.
My argument was that if CILIP aren't doing things like fervently advocating
minimum salaries and that's what people want then for some theres little
point paying Cilip subs when you could be spending the same money on
getting trade union representation and trying it that way. Especially true
I would guess in jobs where the idea of being chartered isn't important.
