IRAQI BOOK TRADE DELEGATION TO VISIT LONDON BOOK FAIR
Thanks to funding from UK Trade and Investment and the British Council,
a group of Iraqi publishers and books specialists will visit the London
Book Fair next month. This is the first such group to visit since the
end of the war, and we hope to learn a great deal from them about the
functioning of the book trade in different parts of Iraq. So far four
members of the group have been named, including the owners of three of
the biggest publishing companies. We are waiting for further nominations
to be made by the group of vice chancellors who were in London last
month. At least some of the four Iraqi university presses should also be
represented. We are also hoping to see at least one senior university
librarian and other university figures charged with setting up bookshop
operations. The universities have agreed to form a consortium in order
to negotiate licensing arrangements for online materials and this will
be an important element of their visit. There are currently no
university bookshops in existence. The PA will organise their programme
of visits, both during and after the Fair. We would welcome any offers
from larger publishers to host members of the group, particularly on
Thursday and Friday 18 and 19 March.
