I am looking forward to the day when there is an easy pay-as-you-go
alternative for online information, including access to the big databases
held by the major online hosts.
Dialog once ran a 'home user' service for a while which I subscribed to,
that almost met the need but didn't last long. Now I don't know of a way in
which I can, for my own interest and in support of my own out-of-work
activities, do the very occasional search on a commercial database.
I imagine it has to wait for a very widely accepted form of micro-payments
for the web.
At The Welding Institute we have a scheme that allows our individual
professional members to access our bibliographic database by paying a fee
for a day's usage through our website, but that's easier than CILIP
negotiating for LISA as we own the data.
