I think many members find CILIP's annual subscription fees
somewhat excessive and difficult to find as the fees are already
towards the top end of UK professional organisation fees. As has
already been mentioned, many librarians (myself included) are not
exactly highly paid so to effectively raise the membership fees for a
sugnificant number by introducing a flat fee rate is not exactly
going to encouragement applications for new or continuing
membership.
Surely CILIP should be doing its utmost to increase membership.
Those in lower paid posts, trainees and more recently qualified
information professionals should be welcomed into the organisation
and encouraged to continue as members throughout their
professional lifetime. A flat fee rate which rewards the higher paid
and places added demands on the lower paid is not going to
achieve this.
Like Laura Tassoni, I may have missed a consultation process, but
I do not think I have.
