If Tim Coates had applied critical reasoning skills when researching for
his report, he would understand that it doesn't neccessarily follow that if
visitors to libraries fall by a certain percentage in a particular time
frame they will continue to do so until there are no more.
The report completely fails to recognise the way that many library services
have already changed to meet new needs, or that libraries serve diverse
communities or that words are just as important when viewed electronically
as when printed.

Just to continue the debate, I have received our issue figures for April -
UP nearly 5% and this is on top of an increrase last year and I know I'm
not the only service that is seeing increases. So the public library is
dying out? - I don't think so!!! Lets have more criticism that we can
prove to be wrong.
By the way if you take a percentage decline year on year, rather than an
actual number, the figure never becomes zero - or am i being too
simplistic? Just shows you can prove anything if you use figures in a
particular way.

... so Hampshire was the only library service willing to be a part of
this report then? Or was it the only service asked?

We really need to get one thing straight. The reason only one
library was used was that it was thought unlikely many or
perhaps any others would have opened their books in such a way,

situation the author perceived. I am sure a further study would
be considered of all 149 public libraries, if we could get them
to participate?
