Dear all,

Many thanks for your responses on this topic.

The two prime examples I was sent:

"Your user might be interested in the current developments in Avon Gloucestershire & Wiltshire SHA to create "Academies" for more info see: http://www.adgw-wdc.nhs.uk/education_learning_acad.htm "

The Knowledge Spa

The Knowledge Spa opens in September as third year students from the Peninsula Medical School come to study in the building and in our hospitals. Alongside them will be nursing students from the Faculty of Health and Social Work at the University of Plymouth, in all around 350 health professionals. There will also be several hundred more part-time students and health professionals using the facilities as a base for their continued development, on an ad-hoc basis.
The £14 million building has been equipped to provide the latest technologies to aid learning including video-conferencing links allowing lectures to be joined by students on sites in Devon and Cornwall, or to be delivered to, or from, anywhere in the country or even abroad. Simulated 'skills laboratories' provide clinical environments to give students realistic experience of working in ward, theatre and laboratory areas.
There are many partners in the creation of the Knowledge Spa. They are:
National Health Service £5.5 m
University of Plymouth £3.0 m approx
Objective 1 £1.25 m
Regional Development Agency £1.25 m
Duchy Health Charity Limited £1.0 m
Cornwall County Council £0.5 m
Additional significant contributions from:
NHS Workforce Confederation
Devon & Cornwall Learning & Skills Council
Cornwall Colleges
The Well Cornwall Project
Going beyond the educational element, there is major commitment to draw maximum benefit from The Knowledge Spa and its capacity to become a focus for medical related research and business development. Support from Objective 1 and the South West Regional Development Agency underlines the potential to derive a multi-million pound economic boost to Cornwall . Incubation units will provide start-up facilities for new businesses and plans are being progressed for development of a nearby medi/science park.

Similar projects:

"We are currently going down this route at the moment. We have just had a Head of Learning appointed who started last week whose remit is to centralise and integrate all education, training and learning activities across our Department of Health and Social Security here on the Isle of Man. Unfortunately, our DHSS Education and Training centre, which is where my library is situated, is not big enough to accommodate all these educational activities, so it'm more of a question of centralising and coordinating them all together under one umbrella and not physically having them all in one physical centre. The sort of education and training activities we're talking about includes pre-registration and post reg training across the board (nursing, PAMS, Medicine, Social Services and Mental Health) in-house training like health and safety, moving and handling, etc"
----
"There are plans to start work on the building of such a centre here next year ('Inverness Medicentre' - not to be the final name - a building for the teaching and education of health profesionals). The building will be shared by NHS Highland, University of Stirling (Nursing & Midwifery Students), NHS Education for Scotland, University of Aberdeen and will include 'incubator space' for private / research companies. It will comprise shared lecture theatres, videoconferencing facilities, IT / training labs, clinical skills centre and a 'learning resources centre'. Anne"
---
"The Charles Hastings Education Centre is a multidisciplinary education centre run by the Charles Hastings Charity situated in the grounds of Worcestershire Royal Hospital. Courses are run for all health care workers in the county and bookings are possible from outside bodies. It contains the Rowlands Library and the George Marshall Medical Museum. Library services are provided to all health and social care workers in the County and reference access is available to all. The library contains the former medical, mental health, public health, nursing and social services libraries.
I think we fit the bill!"

City Hospitals Sunderland were also suggested...
----
"> Not sure if we qualify but here in the Education Centre at Queen
> Elizabeth Hospital we have the following under one roof:- Healthcare
> Library & Knowledge Services where we have a computer suite which
> we use
> to offer courses provided by Careconnect - a spin off from LearnDirect
> and much more reliable; Medical & Dental Education; Research &
> Development; Training Department - provides a variety of courses
> including induction to the Trust for all new employees, management
> courses, team building, fair access etc; NVQ's both Care [inc clinical
> skills coaches] and Business & IT; Manual Handling; IT training rooms;
> ECDL training room; Resuscitation Dept. "

I believe Barnet PCT are also working on something in this direction
------

I think that about covers the suggestions so far. Apologies if I have inadvertently skipped someones response.

Cheers
