Colleagues,
Can we keep this (now dreary and repetitive) discussion off-list and
between the interested parties please?
Seasons greetings one and all,

Roy, the letter you link to is signed by Vaclav Havel. I presume this is
the same Vaclav Havel who, along wth other conservative statesmen,
signed the toadying letter last year supporting the US and treating
communism and fascism as "twin evils" which of course they were not. As
for "free Cuba", what would that mean in practice but a corrupt
oligarchy implementing neo-liberal policies?

The most irritating thing about Robert Kent's messages is that each one
provokes an intemperate response from librarians who think that only
left-wingers should be allowed to spread propaganda. I agree that there
are some things about the Castro regime, e.g. its record in education
and healthcare, that appear to be praiseworthy, and I would like to
visit Cuba one day. However only gullible lefties, of whom there are
plenty in British universities, would turn a blind eye to its failings.
At one time plenty of British academics could be found who were willing
to act as apologists for communism. Former eastern European political
leaders who campaigned for freedom and know what it is like to live
under communist regimes are naturally much less gullible and are
prominent critics of the Cuban government. See the letter by Vaclav
Havel, Arpad Goncz and Lech Walesa.

remembering that Robert Kent is funded by right wing Cuban-American
means. Plus, the 'librarians' he refers to are not librarians but are
mostly fronting dissident political
