I take it that Peter's greeting is a typo?
We are actively looking at moving from VHS to DVD. The initial spur came
from the film studies lecturers, because of the extra bits available on DVD,
but we are keen on two counts: space-saving, and the high number of videos
which are coming back damaged (mostly magnetically). We have DVD playback
in the library, and intend to buy a recorder for off-air soon.
Is it too early? Market penetration in the UK was about 33% in November; I
suspect that £35 DVD players in Tesco, etc will have increased that figure
significantly over Christmas. The other factor causing us to hold back is
that there are still very few players in college, but we are hoping that
this will be remedied over the course of this academic year.
I sincerely hope that DVD will not be superseded by some other format, as
the changeover from VHS will create enough headaches (who remembers
Betamax?). We have about 2,000 videos. We could in theory copy any
ERA-licence videos to DVD, but the work involved would only be justified if
they were much in demand. We would not of course be allowed to do this for
bought-in videos. Inevitably I think we will have to live with the two
formats for a considerable transition period, until natural wastage takes it
toll.
Picture quality is much improved though!

Subject: DVD recorders
Hell All
Has anyone started the move away from VHS to DVD recording instead for
their video libraries? I would be interested in views on this subject.
Is it still too early? Is the standard established yet? Is DVD even the
format for the future?
Thanks
