Faculty of Advocates
The Scottish Bar is one of Scotland's most ancient and prestigious
organisations with a membership of about 425 practising Advocates. The
Advocates Library was inaugurated in 1689 and is the statutory deposit
library for law publications in Scotland. It has four distinct areas of
operation, namely, Reader Services; Bibliographic Services; Periodicals and Court Papers/General Services. The library processes several thousand items
of new stock annually and operates the Voyager Library Management System.
Senior Library Assistant: Bibliographic Services (Ref 04/01)
Salary Scale from £18,958 per annum
The post of Senior Library Assistant: Bibliographic Services reports to the Librarian: Bibliographic Services and assists with the bibliographic
control and stock management of all material received by the Advocates Library
The incumbent is a member of a Library team and has responsibility for
organising stock management in the Library, and for identifying and
organising Rare Books conservation and binding. Along with assisting in
all classification and cataloguing activities, the post holder is
responsible for assisting in the maintenance of policy guidelines, work
manuals and user guides and supervising the work of Library Assistants in bibliographic functions where necessary.
Consequently the successful candidate will need a degree or a library
qualification at HNC level or above. Knowledge of stock management and of modern cataloguing and classification techniques is desirable. Library
Experience of at least one year is essential, however, a shorter period of relevant experience in a law-related or other special library would be
taken into consideration.
