EASEL PROJECT
Assistant Librarian (temporary 3 year position)
Academic-Related Grade 2: £21,125-£27,339 (under review)
A full-time Assistant Librarian is required for the Mellon-funded Project
EASEL (Enhancing Access to the Serials Literature) to fill a temporary
position for 3 years in the first instance, with a possibility of extension
for a further year. This is a new project and the person appointed will be
part of a team of 6, responsible for improving the overall standard of
serials records for items held in the Bodleian Library. The work involves
creating/amending holdings records online according to the information
provided in the serials registration files, upgrading existing serials
records, copy cataloguing and original cataloguing. The post-holder will
have primary responsibility for conversion of foreign language serials
where linguistic expertise is not available among clerical staff or a
record cannot be found in an external database, so working knowledge of at
least one Western/Eastern European language is essential. Being a focal
point for queries/problems, the post-holder will also undertake supervisory
duties, for which appropriate experience is desirable. Thorough familiarity
with cataloguing procedures and principles (including serials cataloguing),
MARC 21, and the Holdings and Authorities formats is essential. Other
requirements include excellent problem solving and communication skills,
accuracy and attention to detail, and the ability to work to a deadline
both independently and in a team.
