The Content Challenge: Publishing for 'The Future of Higher Education'
City University, London EC1 - Wednesday 21 April 2004
Having scraped through its Second Reading in the most dramatic style at the
end of January, the Higher Education Bill is set to significantly change
the way universities are run. Tuition fees may have caught the headlines,
but the White Paper on 'The Future of Higher Education' also has
significant implications for the information world:
- How can library and information services meet the needs of a growing
student body with increasing expectations of value for money?
- How will these content needs be funded?
- How can LIS best help lecturers deliver quality teaching and learning?
- What role do libraries have in the delivery of e-learning?
- How should LIS interact with others in the information chain to deliver
the Government's strategy for higher education?
This afternoon conference, jointly organised by the Publishers Association
and City University and supported by the Times Higher Education Supplement,
will address these questions by gathering together HE administrators and
policy makers, librarians, lecturers, publishers, online aggregators and
retailers.
We have lined up Chris Barnham (Higher Education Strategy Performance Unit,
DfES) and Diana Laurillard, (e-Learning Strategy, DfES) talk us through the
vision behind the HE Bill plus a panel of speakers from the university,
library and publishing worlds to respond to these strategic presentations
with the practicalities. What do these plans actually mean for those in the
content chain - from the consumers (universities and students) to
librarians, creators and aggregators? An open forum will then debate the
issues and we hope to emerge with some solid recommendations for
collaboration.
