I've been following this discussion with mounting alarm as I've just
invested in a DVD recorder. Then I made a few calculations and discovered
that in one year we record almost 250 DVDs-worth of off-air recording, or in
storage terms (assuming no compression) well over 1 terabyte per annum.
So at present I don't think storing on HDD is an option for us.
I don't think anyone really knows yet how permanent DVDs are likely to be -
I've seen 'a few years' quoted in a UKERNA presentation on digital
preservation. That would do for 90-odd per cent of our recordings. If DVDs
last as long as our CDs (and the technology to play them) I will be
satisfied.

Subject: Video , dvd and hard disk
There has been some discussion recently of the move from videotape to
DVD but this is already being overtaken by hard disk storage of off-air
or downloaded recordings. Has anyone made the jump to recording directly
to computer using tv tuner card and network storage of programmes.? Does
anyone know of software that will handle timer recordings on computer?
