Data Protection for Information Professionals

The course provides a basic grounding and overview of data protection from
the perspective of library and information professionals. Delegates will
be given an awareness of the key issues in data protection; examples of
good practice; and ideas for developing a compliance strategy.
Wednesday 17 November
Electronic Copyright and Negotiating Licences
10am-5pm

Course leader: Paul Pedley
The morning session provides a basic overview of the issues involved in
electronic copyright. It considers the risks involved, and what can be
done to minimize those risks. The session also covers the changes brought
about by the ?Copyright and Related Rights Regulations 2003?.
The afternoon session will consider what to watch out for when negotiating
licences for electronic products. It is aimed at people who have to deal
with taking out, renewing, or cancelling licenses for online resources;
and how to ensure that you are getting value for money.

Paul Pedley is Head of Research at the Economist Intelligence Unit, and
has previously worked in the information departments of a law firm,
property developer, and in a number of government departments. He is a
Fellow of CILIP; represents Aslib on the Libraries and Archives Copyright
Alliance; and is also on the steering group of the JISC Legal Information
service. He is author of several publications in his fields of expertise
and also maintains an information law weblog at
