Whose responsibility is plagiarism? Adopting holistic approaches.
Sheffield Hallam University, Adsetts Centre
Monday 8 November 2004
2.00pm-5.00pm
Dealing effectively with plagiarism requires institutions to look at it holistically and strategically, recognising that a number
of issues need to be addressed at the same time:
* having the appropriate procedures and regulations in place
* providing students with information and training
* staff adopting approaches to assessment that do not encourage or reward plagiarism.
This half day event will examine these three elements and consider how library and information specialists can best contribute to
this approach.
The session leader, Ranald Macdonald, who is Head of Academic Development in the Learning and Teaching Institute at Sheffield
Hallam University, has been involved in plagiarism research and development throughout the UK and internationally. He has a
particular interest in moving from the 'police and punish' approach to one which is more grounded in the academic values and
practices of a university.
Kay Moore is an Information Specialist at Sheffield Hallam University and has worked with academics to raise their awareness of
the skills gap that can sometimes cause students to fall into the plagiarism trap. She is responsible for the development of the
on line Information Literacy package, InfoQuest and will be reviewing a range of strategies for developing literacy skills.
Ruth Stubbings, currently Academic Services Manager at Loughborough University Library, is particularly interested in the
development of students study skills, the exploitation and marketing of library services and managing users expectations. To this
end she has been involved in several projects that ensure greater access to resources and the development of teaching material
that helps develop students information searching and generic study skills.
