the perspective of library and information professionals. Delegates will
be given an awareness of the key issues in data protection; examples of
good practice; and ideas for developing a compliance strategy. Topics to

Wednesday 17 November : Electronic Copyright and Negotiating Licences

Morning session: Electronic copyright: an overview
This course provides a basic overview of the issues involved in electronic
copyright. It considers the risks involved, and what can be done to
minimize those risks. The session also covers the changes brought about by
the ?Copyright and Related Rights Regulations 2003?. Topics covered
include:
· Electronic copyright issues - problems and solutions
· The law relating to databases
· Common myths about electronic copyright
· Impact of the new legislation
· Copyright and the internet, including deep linking
· What is the role of the collective licensing societies for digital
content
· Q& A and general discussion.
Afternoon session: Negotiating Licences for Electronic Products
This session will consider what to watch out for when negotiating licences
for electronic products. It is aimed at people who have to deal with
taking out, renewing, or cancelling licenses for online resources; and how
to ensure that you are getting value for money. Topics covered include:
· why digital is different
· clauses in a typical contract
· examples of model contracts
· copyright law v contract law
· Interactive discussion ? sharing of experiences, problems
encountered and possible solutions.

Paul Pedley is Head of Research at the Economist Intelligence Unit, and
has previously worked in the information departments of a law firm,
property developer, and in a number of government departments. He is a
Fellow of CILIP; represents Aslib on the Libraries and Archives Copyright
Alliance; and is also on the steering group of the JISC Legal Information
service. He is author of several publications in his fields of expertise
and also maintains an information law weblog at
