SLIM - the networking group for workplace librarians in the Midlands - is revising its mailing list and in future we would like to publicise our activities purely by e-mail. If you would like to be included on the e-mail list, please email Lyndsay Rees-Jones at CILIP with your details ([log in to unmask] - please put "SLIM - contact details" in the subject line). Please e-mail us even if you think you are on our mailing list as this will help us to verify our database.
SLIM was set up six years ago by two Midlands librarians, Chris Crabtree and Margaret Brittin. They felt there was a need for an informal network for people working in workplace libraries to come together to discuss areas of common interest and to overcome professional isolation. Since then the group has gone from strength to strength and has spawned similar groups in other parts of the country.
There is no formal structure to the group and no joining fees or conditions. The group is as strong as its members! We meet several times a year and recent topics have included knowledge management, raising our image and profile, and extranets and intranets. We have been very fortunate to have the support of CILIP, who have done mailing for us, but it is not a CILIP group and you don't need to belong to CILIP to come along.
Our next meeting will be on Wednesday 17th November (2.30 pm to 4.30 pm at Birmingham Public Library) and will focus on coaching and mentoring. The two subjects are often mentioned in the same breath but are in fact different processes. Jim Aspden, an experienced training consultant in a local training company, will guide us through the subject in a lively and interactive session. He will look at the styles and skills that people use when acting as mentors and explore the key principles of developmental coaching. Full details will appear on lis-link shortly or you can contact me directly for further details.
