This may have been discussed before, but isn't it the Institute that is chartered, not the members? So could individuals be "chartered" if they no longer belonged?

Can I take issue with that last statement - I remain a member of CILIP
because if I stop paying my subscription I lose my Chartership (unlike
Chartered Engineers for instance). Whilst Chartership has near zero benefit
to my employability and continuing professional development now - I remain
a member out of a bloody-mindedness that I wont give up a qualification I
worked hard to get 15 plus years ago. The numbers given above therefore
show a false apparent enthusiasm for membership as we are being held
hostage against loss of a hard earned qualification.
I would like to see CILIP remove the bracketing of membership and
chartership and then we might really see how valued the members feel the
services they receive are. I would continue to author for Update and Facet
whether I was a member or not and I continue to work with and for
librarians every day - CILIP has a valued role, but for me it just is not
that of holding its members fees hostage.

Simon
