May I respond to J.W.T.Smith's comment :

If CILIP is only for traditional librarians, may I ask why it continues to charter those of us working in IT-focused library roles, and why did it merge with the Institute of Information Science?
Also, there is much difference between a pure IT job and one in information services, such as e-learning or content management, which often require traditional skills such as user education or electronic document classification using an authority file.
I might add I am not a qualified IT professional, but am chartered and qualifed in LIS, so the boundaries are shifting.
One day, the pipes may outnumber the water!
