Dear Lis-Linker
I'm updating my records of charities or book sellers that would be
interested in books that are over 10 years old which have been withdrawn
from our stock. I am aware of the fact that Book Aid International
needs
books under 10 years old.
A similar query was posted on Lis-Link in Feb 2003 and Addyman Books,
Anybook, Libretto and Phatpocket were mentioned. Can you recommend any
others, particularly ones that collect free of charge?
I will summarise any replies for Lis-Link.
1) One university library is currently in touch with the following:
Plurabelle Books, 77 Garden Walk, Cambridge CB4 3EW
Francis Edwards, The Old Cinema, Castle St, Hay-on-Wye HR3 5DF
They appeared to show interest when told that the library in question
had more than 1000 unwanted donations, mostly in history, literature and
related subjects, but doubt whether smaller quantities would interest
them.
2) 19th century science titles are of interest to Dr David E. Webber,
Director General, World Self-Medication Industry, [log in to unmask], who
is willing to collect, assuming the volume justified it.
3) Books Express, are always interested in acquiring large book
collections. They offer free collection throughout the UK. They are
always open to negotiation regarding payment for collections if they are
deemed to be of value. Alternately, they offer Library of Congress
Cataloging Distribution Service publications as exchange materials. This
is particularly popular with items such as the Library of Congress
Subject Headings. They generally do not acquire journals or foreign
language publications.

4) The Book Cooperative also provide a means of disposing of unwanted
books and journals. I did not receive a reply from them but they posted
their details in LIS-LINK last week,

I hope these replies are helpful for those of you interested in this
topic.
