I am also on a low scale and get tired of other professionals telling me I
am being exploited and undervalued. To a degree I am, but I get more out of
my job than money!
I always remind myself that I have the option to get another job if I don't
like my salary or having to constantly fight the good fight to raise it to a
fairer scale, but I love my job and take a great deal of professional pride
in what I do.
We are also going to be undergoing a reassessment of all jobs within our
organisation in the next year and I hope that this will strengthen my case
for inceased renumeration. These things only change if we stick with it and
try to change things from the inside - sneering at those professionals who
work in the lower pay scales, but do the same work is not an answer - a
lower salary doesn't mean you are bad at your job!
We all need to raise awareness of professional salaries within our
organisations, but perhaps we should also raise awareness within the
profession regarding how we perceive those on lower salaries. Please don't
assume that individuals on the lower scale are without professional
qualifications/moral fibre/etc. Those of you lucky enough to be more highly
paid could perhaps bare that in mind before you hoot at the thought of only
being paid 15K and compare us to child killers (joking or not).
Enough rant!

You got offered £15k, that's the top of my scale. This was one of the things
that annoyed me with the fire-fighters, they were saying it's impossible to
live on such a small amount, but many librarians and the specialties within
information work have to.
Incidently those of us out there with degrees pertinent to our jobs within
an NHS library should be on A & C 5 when Agenda for Change comes into force.
I'm currently trying to get hold of any job descriptions which would help me
with my case for being bumped up a grade (i'm currently A & C 4 on just over
£14k). I'm determined to get the higher grade but don't know if the powers
that be will see it the same way.

When I finally go tothe interview (the wait, the room I had to wait in, all was signalling"oh-oh" to me, but decided to be "positive"). The fact that they didn'tanswer my email regarding "salary negotiable" should have rung strong bells- the top salary for this was no more than 15k, pro rata (remember what asenior official said recently about the Ian Huntley case "what kind ofpeople you get for 15k ?").
