Dear all,
in the last EGEE meeting in Den Haag a few expressed
the wish to be informed about upcoming release(s),
their dates and contents before the release content
is put firmly in place on the certification testbed.
Since the latest LCG 2.3.0 was released yesterday, it
is, perhaps, a good moment to follow up with our plans
for the next LCG2 upgrade.
The following is the already well reduced list of features,
changes, improvements and bug fixes which we are currently
working on. These elements are in various stages of integration,
testing and certification, some of them are still
considerations for improvements. All in all, this list
is *not* a "cast-in-concrete" and may change little before
the final certification, but it's close enough according
to our judgment to warrant a public distribution.
Remember, our goal is to release the *same* version of every
piece of middleware for any of the supported OS/architectures,
currently RH7.3, SLC3 (both IA32 as well as IA64) versions.
The IA64 support for WNs is one of our targets of this upcoming
upgrade. The rest of LCG2 services for IA64 will be released
in the after-the-next upgrade.
Again: please, keep in mind things can still slightly change,
more details below.
Expected modifications/changes/features:
----------------------------------------
- VOMS
Will be added to the LCG2 distribution.
The current issue is still with IA64 support,
developers are working on the last problems
identified, their work should be finished by
FRI Dec/3.
The VOMS version we intend to use is 1.3.0.
We will hold the release until VOMS is tested
on all architectures.
User doc changes are required.
- GFAL/lcg-utils
Full capture of meaningful errors messages.
Code is finished, testing in progress.
Changes are backward compatible in the sense
that user code will work as-is if unchanged, the
source must be changed to take advantage of new
features.
User doc changes are required (to include list of
possible error messages)
- DLI (Data Location Interface)
Special way to access a data catalog developed by
experiments. Requested by CMS.
Already tested on EIS testbed, currently in
certification phase on C&T testbed.
We will hold the release if problems found.
User doc changes required.
- LFC (LCG File Catalog)
Already included in the previous release, however,
we continue with more and more stress testing, both
for MySQL and Oracle backends.
- DPM (Disk Pool Manager)
If included, it will be included as *alpha* release
to allow for early external exposure and feedback.
Internal testing is in progress.
Socket interface tested.
DPM will support SRM v1 and large subset of SRM v2.
To be fully usable we need to obtain the security module
from CERN, if it cannot be obtained the rfiod will not
work yet with DPM.
- Tank & Spark
The applications installation tool.
LCFGng module written and tested.
Testing in progress.
- Worker Nodes for IA64 architecture.
Three WN IA64 were attached to the SLC3 (IA32) C&T
testbed. Intensive testing is in progress.
- dCache
C&T team will obtain new rpm's from developers on FRI
Dec/3. They will be deployed immediately to see what is
the new behavior.
Two options:
.. it will be released with list of problems still
identified
.. it will not be released.
Cannot decide at this point.
- number of small and bigger bug fixes or code changes,
they will be fully describe in the release note, as
always.
The current target date for the next LCG2 upgrade is
Dec/10, it may be extended until Dec/17 if we determine
it would be beneficial for the quality of the release.
For the LCG certification team
