Jel,
Get yourself a copy of a simple CAD program, 3D is not necessary, I
use Turbocad 3.0 for Dos which is ancient being designed for 286's then
carefully draw the space you are to fit the stairs in, (in all 3 axis) (if
your builder got it square and with upright walls you have a rare dwelling)
consult the local building code as it almost certainly will specify maximum
and minimum depth and pitch of the treads. I built our stairs from a kit of
parts created from my drawings of the space by a local joinery firm as there
was little difference between that cost and buying the wood. This is a
strategy I would commend as pricing my time to shape raw timber from scratch
would be more expensive. Note children that have learned to ski seem to wish
to come down 4 steps at a time and jump from the half landing, (some
strategicly placed beefing up now may be in order)
