I see, Holmes, a sort of Curious Incident of the Minister at the
Despatch Box.
Politicians are canny people, and may well have recognised that Shipman
is not the same as Bristol and Alder Hey. Joe Public doesn't know much
about paediatric pathologists or cardiac surgeons, and almost certainly
doesn't know one. They are therefore easy to demonise, and the
"victims" were poor wee babbies. However Joe almost certainly does know
a GP or two and is quite likely to hold at least one in reasonably high
regard. Joe will no doubt want to know that measures are in place to
detect any future mass murderers, but may not see Dame Janet's other
recommendations as essential.
The GPC needs to do some hard lobbying and fast.
(Who knows, maybe it already is?)
