But that's precisely the problem. If you're techy minded and know how map or
block ports, the hardware firewall should be the perfect solution.
But I'm not at all knowledgable about ports or firewalls, and neither D-Link
nor several user/customer fora seem able to provide the instructions needed

I recommend making an effort to limit access to the network at the router
despite the SP2 firewall, which I agree does report itself to be and is
claimed by its manufacturer to be an improvement over what went before.
Apart from anything else, the router is the place to do port mapping, where
you present a single port 80 for instance to the outside world, and
internally that is directed to a single one of your computers.
