Mary,
Jel's problem is different you are correct.
UKCHIP probably won't be able to revalidate anyone as a doctor.
However it may be able to help set standards or conduct appraisals which
will smooth the path of infomaticians who wish revalidation by the GMC.
If anyone wants to remain on the supplementary list of a PCO they will need
eventually to actively participate in appraisal, which will refer, at least
in part, to their clinical work.
The GMC may then require supplementary evidence, and the quantity may
eventually depend on an assessment of how robust appraisal is proving in
the eyes of the government and lawyers.
As Trefor has said the position of medical informaticians has been on the
agenda for a considerable time. Part of EVERY doctor's revalidation is
about probity, and a key factor in this is not undertaking independent
(non-training) work for which one is not trained or prepared. This would
apply to informaticians who suddenly wish to work as brain surgeons, or, I
suppose brain surgeons who suddenly want to work as informaticians!
