Midge,
OK lots of generalisations coming up.

Hehe - shame PrivateRx is private - nice debate at the moment between a MCA (or whatever it's been renamed) pharmacist and a
NPC pharmacist about the appropriate treatment of gout given the lack of evidence (see a recent DTB) - or the BBC version

Many PCT's have yet to set an agenda (other than what can't/shouldn't be done without endless meetings first). PA's can
therefore set our own agendas - within limits - which tend to be wider if you don't tell the what you've done until after
you've done it - and how much you want to play politics and keep your job. I suppose it also helps if your working with the
PEC lead GP;-)
The whole PA thing is relatively new - with a continued rapid expansion in numbers after the advent of PCT's.
As a group we are probably happier dealing with evidence that exists and "best practice" where it has been defined, than with
"pig-evidence"
http://www.jr2.ox.ac.uk/bandolier/band44/b44-1.html
"Imagine that we tell you that Bandolier has trained a pig to talk. What foolishness you say. But we bring this talking pig
before you and the pig says "Good evening", and proceeds to summarise the day's news for you. Hopefully you would be amazed
by this phenomenon, and would not immediately demand a randomised selection of 100 pigs to check it out. The fact that any
pig can talk is what is important."
PA's (OK me) tend to take a different approach from GPs - you are faced with the patient and then make treatment choices -
PA's look at treatment choices first (especially the one's that aren't "best practice") and then the patients they are
applied to.

Jeff
