You've got to look at it from their point of view. An imposter could say
they are a doctor and then start injecting unsuitable drugs into ill
passengers. Since it is standard practice for French doctors to carry a
professional card, then it is reasonable for airline staff to ask to
see it before allowing the doctor access to the drugs.
In the absence of a professional card, the captain would make the
decision about whether the box should be opened. He carries overall
responsibility for the welfare of the passengers.
