Interesting.
When I was working with the Dene native Canadian tribe, we had lots of drunk
men coming in and demanding to be seen straight away in the ER (ahead of
everyone else). The department was incredibly busy with just one doc on at
a time and saw lots of trauma, so of course I told them to "F&ck off".
I think they at first thought I was just another racist white guy who looked
down on them.
Then a teacher turned up from the local school with some minor ailment and
started giving the Dene nurses lip and demanding to be seen out of turn
because she was 'missing work' - I gave her the same Robbie charm that I had
given the others and told her to 'Sit the f&ck down and shut the f&ck up and
we would get to her when it was her turn'.
But of course she was white (parachuted in to the reservation to teach the
local kids).
It was a surprise to me, but apparently the Dene had never seen a white
person talk to another white person that way before (and certainly not
taking a Dene's side against a white person).
They suddenly realised that I treated everyone equally (ie: I was rude to
everyone equally!) and after that I was the darling of the hospital.
Bizarre.
