You may be thinking of Genisyst, a now defunct system that has been
incorporated within Torex but which we used to run before switching to
EMIS in 1994.
It ran on an obscure Australian operating system called BOS (later
renamed, but I forget to what). Under BOS, the <Esc> key was frequently
used in the manner you suggest.
Under EMIS the <F1> ("Exit") key always cancels a choice or returns you
to the previous stage, as its name implies. When using LV on a Windows
box (rather than the old Wyse monitor/keyboard combos) the <Esc> key
does the same thing as <F1>.
