"2.3 Aromatherapy
Several placebo controlled trials of aromatherapy have been completed in
people with dementia experiencing behavioural symptoms. Each of these
studies identified a significant effect on agitation compared to
placebo, with very few side effects. The treatments used were either
melissa (lemon balm) or lavender oil, delivered by a variety of methods,
and prolonged massage is not a necessary component for efficacy. The
effect size is at least as large as that seen in placebo controlled
trials of neuroleptic agents."
Gosh. Thought most aromatherapy was barking but pleasant nonsense.
Apparantly not.
What were the methods?
