Background
Following an award from the British Economic and Social Research Council
(ESRC), a new national research centre on migration was established at the
University of Oxford. With renewable core-funding of £3.4 million for its
initial five-year period, the Centre on Migration, Policy and Society [COMPAS]
commenced activities in October 2003.
The mission of COMPAS is to provide a strategic, integrated approach to
understanding contemporary and future migration dynamics across sending areas
and receiving contexts in the UK and EU. The Centre also aims to become a
national focal point for theoretical advancement, methodological innovation
and original empirical research in international migration studies.
COMPAS research programmes will be concerned with key issues surrounding
mobility and population movement. At all stages, research activities will
reflect an extensive set of relationships with users in government departments
in Britain and elsewhere, international institutions, business, NGOs and
community groups. The Centre will contribute to the public agenda by
interrogating policy options and highlighting best practices for effective and
just migration management. COMPAS will help provide Britain with the research
capability it needs to understand and respond effectively to global migration
trends. Research projects will be organized around five programmes:
1. SENDING CONTEXTS incl. remittances and development, internal labour
mobility, brain drain
2. MEANS OF MIGRATION incl. smuggling, trafficking, agencies, networks,
methods and routes
3. INTEGRATION AND SOCIAL CHANGE incl. informal sector, family reunion, second
generation
4. THE MIGRATION-ASYLUM NEXUS incl. root causes of migration, policy regimes,
legal status
5. MIGRATION MANAGEMENT incl. impact of policy tools, labour market trends,
public opinion
