CALL FOR CASE STUDIES ON LOCAL SUSTAINABILITY

  What's it all about?

Community Environment Associates have been asked by DEFRA to "to identify
examples of community engagement in achieving sustainable development at the
local level and to evaluate its impacts." This will form part of the review
of the UK sustainable development framework.

This is an important opportunity to evaluate the impact of local action on
sustainability in England.

  What do we need?

We are looking for particularly good practice case studies covering the
following areas:

1 Community Planning and Sustainable Development
We are particularly looking for Parish Plans, Neighbourhood Plans and
Community Strategies which help achieve sustainable development.

2 Community consultation and sustainable development
We are particularly looking for local authority consultation which featured
sustainable development. This might be within the framework of Local Agenda
21, especially where this has been taken out to communities, but could cover
any other relevant process as well.

3 Community initiatives and sustainable development
We are particularly looking for community run local initiatives (at
neighbourhood, village or district level), which contribute to sustainable
development.

In the first instance, we will be compiling a long list of good practice
projects and then looking to highlight a smaller number of groups in the
report to DEFRA.

We would welcome any suggestions from subscribers to this list. Please feel
free to nominate projects that you are directly involved with or have come
across in the course of your work. We will be contacting organisations to
make sure they feel happy about being included, so if there are areas of the
project you are uncertain of, don't let that put you off nominating a
project.

Ideally we are looking for projects that have already been written up but if
you do know of an excellent project that has not been written up but would
fit squarely under one of those three headings, then do please let us know.

We are restricted to projects based in England.

  What's the next step?

If you do want to nominate a project, it would be very helpful if you could
provide the following information:
- Which of the areas listed above is the project is an example of best
practice in?
- What group or organisation has undertaken the project?
- a brief description of the project
- What aspects of the project do you think make it an example of good
practice?. In particular what were the key outcomes of the project?
- Who should we contact to discuss this project in more detail and to get
permission to include the project in this study?
- Where can we obtain a copy of the case study concerning this project?
