their local communities?

Chair: Cllr Sir Jeremy Beecham, Chairman, Local Government Association
Direct elections to NHS foundation trust boards and police authorities have
been proposed to help meet the need to strengthen local accountability and
put communities in control of public services. But where does local
government fit? Is there a real risk that multiplication of single-purpose
elected bodies will lead to fragmentation of local governance when key
problems demand a joined-up response? Or is this just a knee-jerk reaction
by politicians who fear losing their local monopoly of elected governance?
And do local people want to participate more anyway?
This is the third of four smith square debates being held at Local
Government House. See the leaflet for full details of the programme for the
2004 series, hosted by the Local Government Association. The debates focus
on a number of key issues that will be the focus of an LGA publication which
seeks to influence the political parties' thinking as we approach the next
general election. To book your place at any of the debates please contact
