Dear All,
Apologies for cross-posting.
Below is an announcement of a lecture on Monday the 8th of November at
Loughborough University, organised by the East Midlands Geotechnical Group :
Date : Monday 8 November 2004, 6.00 for 6.30pm
Subject : "GEOTECHNICAL ASPECTS OF JACKED BOX TUNNELLING"
Venue: Room J002, Edward Herbert Building (EHB), Loughborough University
(Map shown at the following link : http://www.lboro.ac.uk/about/findus.html ).
Light refreshments will be available from 6.00 pm.
Speaker : Dr Doug Allenby - Chief Chief Tunnelling Engineer, Edmund Nuttall Ltd
Abstract :
Jacked Box Tunnelling is a non-invasive technique for constructinga new
underpass culvert or sub-way beneath existing infrastructure, for example
roads, railway tracks and platforms. It was used for the first time under a
live motorway in the UK at J15A (Northampton) on the M1 Motorway when a
vehicular underpass 14m wide 8.5m high and 45 long was installed with a
minimum cover of 1.6m to the Motorway.
The lecture will describe the ground control measures which make it
possible to install large section monolithic boxes at shallow depth through
a wide range of ground conditions, Milestone achievements will be discussed
including the world's largest jacked box tunnelling contract recently
undertaken in Boston USA.
Speaker's Biography :
Dr Doug Allenby is Chief Tunnelling Engineer for Edmund Nuttall Lt. He has
over 30 years construction experience in tunnelliing and has recently been
involved in some of the worlds largest jacked box tunnelling projects (the
subject of tonight talk). He is a Fellow of the ICE, and is currently Vice
Chair of ICE South. He is a past chair of the Pipe Jacking Association and
is a visiting professor in the School of Civil Engineering and Geosciences
at Newcastle University.
