I have just visited a restorer who is working on a 19th century wooden ship figurehead. Amongst other things he is inserting a steel armature sealed in place using polyurethane foam. I would like to give him other options and the reasons why.
1) Does anyone have any references to ship figurehead conservation/restoration?
2) Does anyone know of any conservators/companies carrying out figurehead conservation/restoration in the UK?
3) Has anyone got any details/references on polyurethane foam degredation and the effect on other materials, particularly wood and steel, and how quickly it degrades?
4) Has anyone come across anything on how to record ships figureheads, particularly structurally
