THE THOMAS WIEDEMANN MEMORIAL FUND
TRAVEL GRANTS FOR CLASSICS POSTGRADUATES
Thomas Wiedemann, Professor of Latin at the University of Nottingham from
1995 to 2001, died on 28 June 2001, aged fifty-one. Generations of students
at Bristol and Nottingham were inspired by his teaching, and he had a huge
influence on the study of the ancient world through both his writings and
his many friendships. A memorial fund has been established in memory of
Professor Wiedemann for the support of postgraduate study of the ancient
world at UK universities. The trustees of the fund are Prof. Richard Buxton
(Bristol), Prof. Stephen Hodkinson (Nottingham, Chair), Dr Oswyn Murray
(Oxford), Dr Jonathan Prag (Leicester), Prof. Christopher Rowe (Durham) and
Prof. Alan Sommerstein (Nottingham, Secretary and Treasurer). Donations to
the fund continue to be welcome: for further information and a donation
form, see
http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/classics/general/wiedemannfund/tejwdonorinformat
ion.htm.
Grants from the fund are available to assist with the costs of visits to
universities, libraries or museums in the UK or in Eire. Any student taking
a taught or research postgraduate course related to the ancient Greek or
Roman world at any university in the UK or Eire is eligible to apply.
Grants will be made mainly for the costs of travel, though in some cases
assistance may also be given with accommodation and subsistence costs. It
is expected that applicants will normally also seek a contribution to their
costs from their own institution. The trustees are particularly keen to
support attendance by individuals or groups at seminars or conferences.
However, grants for attendance at the Classical Asociation Annual
Conference or at the Annual Meeting of Postgraduates in Ancient History
(AMPAH) will be made only in exceptional cases.
Applications for grants should be made by completing and submitting the
online form at
http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/classics/general/wiedemannfund/tejwfundapp.htm,
normally at least one month before the intended date of travel. Applicants
should also ask their supervisor or course director or another referee to
send a brief statement in support of their application by e-mail to Prof.
Sommerstein ([log in to unmask]).
Awards will not be made for travel to countries other than the UK or Eire.
Students are eligible for only one award in a single academic session.
