ARCHIVES ASSISTANT / GRADUATE TRAINEE

Salary: £14,128 p.a. including London Weighting (pending review of pay
system in July 2004)

Location: Lambeth Palace Library, London SE1 7JU.

This post is offered on a one year fixed-term contract to run August
2004-August 2005 and is suitable for someone seeking work experience before
taking a postgraduate course in archives and records management.

Duties:
*       Assisting in the running of the Reading Room, by admitting readers,
fetching and returning material for readers, supervising use of material,
and other related duties.
*       Assisting with work on the archives and manuscripts, including
computerised cataloguing using CALM for Archives.
*       Supervising tour parties and other visitors to the Library.
*       Answering routine genealogical and other enquiries.
*       Assisting in implementing a basic preservation programme by
re-boxing or cleaning documents.
*       Processing orders for photocopying and digital photography.
*       Any other Library duties as required.

Requirements: Essential
*       Good honours degree in the humanities (or expect to achieve one this
summer).
*       IT literate with good keyboarding skills.
*       Knowledge of at least on foreign language (GSCE minimum).
*       Ability to work on one's own and as a member of a team.
*       Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
*       Ability to work methodically and accurately.
*       Ability to deal politely and efficiently with members of the public.
*       Ability to move books and archive boxes within the confines of an
historic building in the course of normal duties.
*       Flexibility and enthusiasm.

Requirements: Desirable
*       Any experience in a record office or similar institution.
*       A basic knowledge of Latin.
*       An interest in history, theology and/or genealogy.
